Community
More Than a School. A Community Hub.
The Yuill School of Agriculture was built by this community. It only makes sense that it belongs to it.
Welcome to the Co-Lab
Outside of school hours, YSA’s facilities are open to local veterinarians, food entrepreneurs, service clubs, and home growers. We call it our Co-Lab — a collaborative workspace where the community grows alongside our students.
The Co-Lab Facilities
Four spaces. One open door.
A professional clinic for rural vets. A classroom for our students.
YSA’s Large Animal Health Centre is a fully equipped livestock treatment facility available at no charge to local veterinarians who need a safe, secure space to care for cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. For young professionals establishing a rural practice, this means reliable access to a functional clinic without the overhead of building one.
In return, YSA students gain something no textbook can offer — the chance to observe real procedures, ask real questions, and learn directly from working livestock health professionals. It’s mentorship built into the infrastructure.

Where local ingredients become market-ready products.
YSA’s commercial test kitchen is a fully licensed, government-approved food production workspace — a launchpad for ideas. Whether you’re a grower experimenting with your first jam recipe, a food entrepreneur developing a scalable product, or someone ready to take an idea to a farmers market, the kitchen takes you from concept to tested prototype to commercial success.
Students use this space to learn food science and value-added production during school hours. The rest of the time, it belongs to the community.

Professional meeting space for the people who make this community work.
Service clubs and non-profits are constantly in need of accessible meeting and training space — and YSA helps fill that gap. Four large classroom spaces and a spacious boardroom, available at no cost to registered non-profits, societies, and community service organizations. If your group needs a place to meet, train, run a workshop, or host a guest speaker, the welcome mat is out.
Organizations like 4-H Clubs, the Medicine Hat Horticultural Society, and Rotary Clubs are exactly who these rooms are built for. Community work deserves community infrastructure.

Grow your own. Learn from the land.
YSA’s garden is state-of-the-art by design — soil-testing technology, environmental sensors, dripline irrigation — but it’s welcoming by intention. This is a hands-on learning space for anyone who wants to grow food better.
Throughout the year, YSA offers community workshops on companion planting, soil fertility, pest and weed identification, water management, and seasonal crop selection. Whether you’ve never planted a seed or you’ve farmed your whole life, there’s something here for you. The garden is a hub for knowledge sharing, mentorship, and collaborative learning — a place where people come together to cultivate skills, food, and community.
