Program Overview

Agriculture is undergoing a technological transformation — and the employers of 2027 are looking for the people who can use it.

Agriculture is undergoing a technological transformation. GPS-guided equipment, drone-based field scouting, satellite imagery, soil sensors, and AI-driven decision tools are rapidly becoming standard tools of the trade — and the agricultural employers of 2027 are actively seeking young people who can use them.

YSA’s Precision Ag program gives students hands-on access to the technology shaping the future of farming. Students operate drones, work with GPS and variable-rate application systems, and analyze real field data from the YSA farm to make management decisions.

This program pairs well with any production-focused program and is ideal for students with interests in technology, data, engineering, or digital systems — applied within the agricultural context they already know.

SAE Opportunities

Real projects. Real outcomes.

Every YSA student designs and runs a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project. Here are five starting points for Innovative Technologies & Precision Ag students:

Complete a full drone-based field map of the YSA farm and produce an orthomosaic map.
Analyze yield map data from a crop enterprise and make management recommendations.
Design a precision irrigation monitoring system using soil sensors for the YSA greenhouse or field.
Conduct a cost-benefit analysis of implementing a specific precision ag tool on a hypothetical 1,000-acre farm.
Build a comparison study of NDVI imagery vs. ground-truth scouting data across a season.
