Beekeeping & Apiary Management

The Hive. The Science. The Business of Bees.

Beekeeping & Apiary Management is one of the most unique programs in Canadian agricultural education — combining insect science, pollination ecology, honey production, and small business development in a hands-on apiary setting.

Program Overview

Alberta is one of Canada’s most important honey-producing provinces — and skilled beekeepers are in short supply.

Alberta is one of Canada’s most important honey-producing provinces, with a thriving commercial apiary sector and a critical role in pollinating crops across the prairies and beyond. Yet skilled beekeepers are in short supply at every level — from hobbyist operations to commercial honey producers.

The YSA Beekeeping program gives students direct experience managing hives on the YSA apiary, harvesting and processing honey, and understanding the complex biology of honeybees and their role in agricultural ecosystems. Students learn to diagnose and treat disease, manage colony health across seasons, and develop their own apiary enterprises.

This program is ideal for students with interests in biology, ecology, entrepreneurship, or food production — and uniquely prepares graduates for careers in commercial apiary operations, agricultural consulting, or independent business ownership.

Industry Connections

Built with the apiarists keeping Alberta’s hives alive.

Beekeeping & Apiary Management at YSA is shaped by commercial beekeepers, provincial industry bodies, and pollination researchers across Alberta — mentors who help design the curriculum and open doors to placements.

Become an Industry Partner
  • Alberta Beekeepers Commission — industry partner for curriculum and mentorship connections
  • Local commercial apiaries in southern Alberta — site visits and work experience
  • YSA Advisory Council members with pollination and crop connections
  • Crop producers who use pollination services — cross-program industry connections
  • University of Alberta Bee Health Lab — guest speaker and research connections

SAE Opportunities

Real projects. Real outcomes.

Every YSA student designs and runs a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project. Here are five starting points for Beekeeping & Apiary Management students:

Manage a set of YSA hives independently across a full season — spring buildup through winter preparation.
Develop a branded honey product and conduct a small market test (farmer’s market or online).
Complete a colony health audit and compare performance data across multiple hives.
Design and build a pollination services contract for a local crop producer.
Create a research project documenting forage plants on the YSA farm and their value to bees.
