Heavy Equipment Operator Certification

Get Behind the Wheel. Get Certified.

YSA’s Heavy Equipment Operator Certification program gives students hands-on experience operating the machinery of modern agriculture — from tractors and combines to skid steers and backhoes — with pathway to formal industry certifications.

Program Overview

The demand for certified, safe, skilled equipment operators in rural Alberta far exceeds supply.

Every sector of agriculture depends on heavy equipment. Crop farmers need combine and tractor operators. Livestock producers need loader and skid steer operators. Construction and land development require backhoe and excavator skills. The demand for certified, safe, and skilled equipment operators in rural Alberta far exceeds supply.

YSA’s heavy equipment program is built around access to real working machinery — including support from Industrial Backhoes (Jaus Neigum), one of YSA’s formal industry partners. Students operate equipment in structured, safety-first training progressions, moving from basic tractor operation to advanced machinery and implements.

This program is unique in Canadian high school education and positions graduates for immediate employment in multiple agricultural sectors — or for trades apprenticeship pathways in equipment operations and technician fields.

Industry Connections

Built with the operators, dealers, and equipment partners who run real fleets.

Heavy Equipment Operator Certification at YSA is shaped by working operators, equipment dealers, and safety professionals across southern Alberta — partners who provide machinery access, mentorship, and direct pathways to employment.

Become an Industry Partner
  • Industrial Backhoes (Jaus Neigum) — formal equipment partner and industry mentor
  • Western Tractor (Steven Dyck) — equipment dealer partnership and industry connections
  • Cypress County — municipal equipment operator connections
  • Alberta Construction Safety Association — OHS training connections
  • YSA Advisory Council agricultural producers who operate large equipment fleets

SAE Opportunities

Real projects. Real outcomes.

Every YSA student designs and runs a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project. Here are five starting points for Heavy Equipment Operator students:

Keep a full season equipment operation and maintenance log for YSA’s tractor fleet.
Design and execute a land preparation project on YSA farmland (tillage, grading).
Conduct a repair and service on a specific piece of YSA equipment — document the process.
Research and compare GPS guidance systems for agricultural equipment — cost-benefit analysis.
Shadow a custom harvesting crew during harvest season and report on operations management.
